Indications and Dosage
Topical/Cutaneous
Musculoskeletal pain
Adult: For temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with arthritis, simple backache, bruises, cramps, muscle strains and sprains: As cream, lotion, gel or spray: Apply liberal amount onto the affected area as needed up to 4 times daily. Massage treated area gently to enhance absorption. Refer to product-specific recommendations.
Child: >12 years Same as adult dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to trolamine salicylate, aspirin or other salicylates. Application on broken, inflamed or irritated skin.
Special Precautions
Children.
Adverse Reactions
Gastrointestinal disorders: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.
Nervous system disorders: Confusion, drowsiness.
Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders: Hyperventilation.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Skin irritation.
Patient Counseling Information
Do not bandage tightly or use with a heating pad. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Trolamine salicylate is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which is often used in topical rubefacient preparations in concentrations between 10-20%. It is believed to exert its action via a counter-irritant effect.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Rapidly and well absorbed after topical application.
